Imogen Heap (born December 9, 1977) is a Grammy-nominated English singer-songwriter from Essex, most famous for her work as part of Frou Frou and for her 2005 solo record Speak For Yourself. Imogen Heap played music from an early age, and is classically trained in many instruments, including the piano (her first instrument), as well as the cello, clarinet, guitar, drums, and the Array Mbira[1]. She had begun to write songs by the time of her eleventh birthday. Her mother, an art therapist, and her father, a rocks construction retailer, separated when Heap was twelve. The boarding school she was sent to lacked students wishing to pursue music and Heap clashed with the music teacher. His idea of punishment was to leave Heap alone to learn for herself, as a result; she principally taught herself sequencing, music engineering, sampling and production on Atari computers. Following this, Heap went on to study at the BRIT School Of Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon, Surrey, (later attended by artists such as Katie Melua). She signed her first record contract at the age of 17 to independent record label Almo Sounds, having enjoyed a prestigious live debut, performing four songs, backed by friends Acacia, between sets by The Who and Eric Clapton at the 1996 Prince's Trust Concert in Hyde Park, London.

Max Richter (b. 1966) is a German-born composer, now living in Great Britain.

He is trained in composition and piano at University of Edinburgh, the Royal Academy of Music, and with Luciano Berio in Florence. The info available on his own website states that his early music was basically hard-core Modernism: much influenced by Xenakis.

After finishing his studies, Richter co-founded the contemporary classical ensemble Piano Circus, where he stayed for ten years, commissioning and performing works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe and Steve Reich. The ensemble was signed to Decca/Argo, producing five CDs.

In 1996 he worked with Future Sound of London on their album Dead Cities. He started initially as a pianist but ended up working on several tracks as well as co-writing one track (titled Max). Richter collaborated with this group over a period of two years with the album The Isness. He has also collaborated with Mercury Prize winner Roni Size, with the album In The Mode.

Richter has released three albums; Memoryhouse (2002 in music), The Blue Notebooks (2004), and his newest release, Songs From Before (2006).

Like the Six Parts Seven, another area group known for its rock soundscapes, Akron's If These Trees Could Talk proves in its self-titled six-song debut that you don't need vocals to ooze emotion. In fact, lyrics would only get in the way of the Trees' dense, flowing sound. This album emotes like Explosions in the Sky, rocks like Tool, and breaks and builds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The crystal-clear production and flawless musical performances make this a local instrumental album that stands high above the mire.

They were formed in Wallasey, England in 1988, with singer/guitarist Sice, guitarist/songwriter Martin Carr, bassist Timothy Brown and now Placebo drummer Steve Hewitt. Between Comets on Fire, Six Organs’ latest work, and Badgerlore, Chasny is proving that he’s ready to move away from his early-period Fahey-worship and into a higher echelon of new American roots music. Badgerlore is too heady, too esoteric to have any long-term impact, but it proves far too meaty to write-off as research for his next “real” venture.

Giant Drag is a Californian Indie rock duo, composed of singer/guitarist Annie Hardy and a simultaneous drummer and synth-player. Micah Calabrese fulfilled the latter role from 2003 through to 2006, but on 5th December 2006 it was reported that he had left the band. [1] They have released an EP, Lemona, in 2003 and a debut album (following Calabrese leaving and then re-joining the band), Hearts and Unicorns, which was released in the United States on September 13, 2005, and February 27, 2006 in the UK.

They have a growing cult following, largely due to their live shows, including shows supporting The Like, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and The Cribs, and are tipped by the NME for "big things in 2006". They also performed in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2006. Annie Hardy can also be heard on the song "Pink Cellphone" from the 2006 Deftones album entitled "Saturday Night Wrist".

The Dead Texan is the audio/visual duo of musician Adam Wiltzie and Greek video artist Christina Vantzou. Wiltzie is better known as one-half of the ambient project Stars of the Lid, opposite Brian McBride. Vantzou has done work for MTV Netherlands, and a promotional video for the band Interpol her work was also featured in the June 2006 edition of Tokion

As of yet, there has been only one Dead Texan release, a self-titled CD/DVD package. The music is very similar to that of Stars of the Lid: long, droning, ambient soundscapes with Stars-esque instrumentation. The songs on The Dead Texan, however, are generally shorter, and lyrics can be heard at times. Indeed, the songs were initially intended to be released as another Stars of the Lid album, but it was ultimately deemed, as Wiltzie put it, "too aggressive."

The Cockney Rejects are an Oi! punk band which formed in the East End of London in 1979. According to their website and other sources, the song Oi, Oi, Oi, from their album Greatest Hits Volume 2 provided the genre's name.

Their biggest UK hit The Greatest Cockney Rip-Off was a parody of Sham 69's Hersham Boys. Other songs were less commercial, partly because they tended to be about street fighting or football hooliganism. This violence was often mirrored at their gigs, which the band sorted out themselves. Jeff and Mick Geggus, who are brothers, had both been keen amateur boxers and had fought at national level.

The Cockney Rejects were supporters of West Ham United Football Club, their hit-song I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles stemmed from a West Ham supporters' chant, which had been sung since the 1920s.

The Cockney Rejects expressed contempt for all politicians in their lyrics, and they rejected claims by the media that they had a British Movement following and/or supported it. In their first Sounds interview they mockingly referred to the British Movement as the 'German Movement' and stated that many of their heroes were black boxers. The book Cockney Reject (2005, Jeff Turner & Garry Bushell) also describes a massive fight against BM members at one of the band's early gigs.

REO Speedwagon is an American rock band which grew in popularity in the Midwestern United States during the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s. REO Speedwagon hits include "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling." Both songs are power ballads, the former being prototypical of the genre and appearing on the group's most commercially successful album, Hi Infidelity, which also included the hit "Take It On The Run," a song that peaked at number five on the U.S. charts. Earlier REO songs "Ridin' The Storm Out," "Golden Country," "Roll With The Changes," and "Time For Me To Fly" enjoy continuous rotation on classic rock radio stations.

Ray LaMontagne is particularly known for his raspy voice, which he claims to have learned by singing through his gut and not his nose. LaMontagne claims that he is highly influenced by Stephen Stills, and critics have compared LaMontagne's music to that of Van Morrison, Nick Drake, and Tim Buckley. LaMontagne refers to himself as a "very private person", and infrequently gives interviews. He also usually does not interact with the audience between songs during his live shows. LaMontagne has been known to perform live shows in the dark in order to separate himself from the audience.

Zoot Woman is a British pop band which plays electronic rock music. Formed by Adam Blake and Stuart Price as an instrumental project, the band enlisted Jonny Blake in 1999. The line-up now includes Bee Hatherley (bass, synthesizers) who joined the band in 2004. Stuart Price has also been working with Madonna since 2002.

Price and Blake also work under the alias Paper Faces for remixes and have reworked tracks for Zoot Woman songs as well as other established recording artists such as Madonna, Scissor Sisters and producers such as Felix Da Housecat and Pete Tong. The band is currently in the process of writing and producing a new album.

Don't be fooled by the genre, I'm not hugely into Nu Metal but I can't get enough of Testeagles. I was dragged along to one of their earlier gigs in the late 90's and tried not to miss one ever again after that, luckily getting to hang out with the band after some shows. Unfortunately for me the band is from Adelaide in South Australia (about 1000km from me!) where they have retired to virtual obscurity, playing the occasional local gig or big local festival (such as the Adelaide leg of Australia's Big Day Out). Every time I put this album I hope there are no girls watching because I can't mosh and I can't dance but it makes me want to do both... at once... very scary stuff! I hope you enjoy the album. If you do, make sure you tell your friends about TE. Who knows, this post could spark newfound interest in the band and encourage them back into the studio and onto the road (okay, now I'm dreaming!) Download it, listen to it, then listen to it again. Then buy it (if you can find it!).
